Ozzy Osborne dies at 76

Ozzy Osbourne, Heavy Metal Legend, Dies At 76

July 23, 2025

Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman of Black Sabbath and one of the most influential figures in heavy metal history, has died at the age of 76.

He passed away early on July 22, 2025, Tuesday, morning at his home in Birmingham, England, surrounded by family.

The announcement was made by Osbourne’s family, who expressed deep sorrow and requested privacy during this time.

A statement from his family read:

It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.

His death comes just 17 days after his final public appearance—a powerful farewell performance in Birmingham alongside the original Black Sabbath lineup.

Dubbed a "living wake," the concert was a celebration of his decades-long career and raised approximately £140 million for Parkinson’s research and children’s charities.

Osbourne had been battling health issues for several years. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2020, he also suffered multiple spinal injuries that led to his retirement from touring in 2023.

Despite his declining health, he remained active in music and public life, culminating in his emotional farewell performance on July 5.

Born in 1948 in Aston, Birmingham, John Michael Osbourne rose to fame in the early 1970s with Black Sabbath.

The band pioneered a dark, heavy sound that laid the foundation for heavy metal. Songs like "Paranoid," "War Pigs," and "Iron Man" became genre-defining anthems.

After leaving the band in 1979 due to substance abuse issues, Osbourne launched a highly successful solo career, with hits like "Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley," eventually selling over 100 million albums combined as a solo artist and with Black Sabbath.

Beyond music, Osbourne became a pop culture icon, largely thanks to the MTV reality show "The Osbournes," which offered a chaotic and humorous glimpse into his family life. He also co-founded Ozzfest, a touring festival that introduced heavy music to new generations.

In his final interview, Osbourne reflected on his tumultuous life and enduring popularity, saying he wanted to be remembered as a survivor who gave everything to his music.

His legacy is etched into the fabric of rock history, not only for his groundbreaking contributions to music but also for his unapologetic authenticity and resilience.

Osbourne is survived by his wife Sharon, their three children, and millions of fans across the world who now mourn the loss of a true rock legend.
