In Conversation With Ikramul Haque
Ikramul Haque is an Assam-based theatre activist who has also been a part of ‘Beharbari Outpost- one of the most popular Assam television series.
Hailing from Dhing in Nagaon district in Assam, Haque has, over the years, transformed from an actor to a mentor, teaching the basics of acting and direction to young minds.
His journey as an actor began in the late 90s when he acted in his first play.
The role and the character had a deep impact on his mind, and he decided to pursue acting as a profession in the latter part of his life.
“I was in Class VIII then, when I had first acted in a play, the script of which was adapted from a Ranju Hazarika story and was written by one of my friends,’ Haque said in a candid interview.
“I loved portraying the character and the bug of acting bit me and since then there has been no looking back,” he added.
“And when I passed my HSLC and took admission at Nowgong College in the science stream, my father asked me to look out for coaching centres for medical entrance,” Haque said, recalling his journey.
“However, I kept looking for acting schools as I was least interested in studying medicine,” he added.
Over the years, Ikramul Haque has struggled and carved out a space for himself in the state’s theatre sector, and has acted alongside several prominent actors, including Zerifa Wahid and Kopil Bora.
In 2019, he opened a mini theatre, Indradhanu Mini Theatre, and has since staged over 60 shows across Assam.
“Indradhanu Mini Theatre was my dream, and after a lot of struggle, I was able to start it last year,” he said.
“We did over 60 shows last year, and people loved our plays. Hope they keep liking and blessing us,” he said.
Ikramul Haque has many dreams in his life, and one of them is to create a holistic theatre environment for young minds in the state.
Hope he succeeds in it.
