Rahul Roy, the former Congress MLA from the Algapur constituency of the Hailakandi district, submitted his nomination papers on Wednesday as an independent candidate.
The former Congress legislator will be contesting the ensuing Assam Assembly polls from the Udharbondh Legislative Assembly Constituency of Cachar district.
It may be mentioned here that Roy is the son of former Congress minister Gautam Roy, who has also resigned from the Congress party and will be contesting the ensuing polls from the Katigorah constituency.
Interacting with the media after filing his papers Roy said that even though he was reluctant to contest the polls, however, his decision changed after the people of the Udharbond constituency showed their trust in him.

He said that he would speak for the people in the Assembly and carry on working for the welfare of the people if he is elected again.
On being asked to speak about his father, Roy said that they both are two different individuals with different political ideologies.
"I respect him as he is my father, but as politicians, he belongs to a different party and I don't belong to any party. I have standing up for the people of Udharbond who have been deprived for the past several decades," Roy added.
