As its new initiative to introduce an internal assessment in Social Science, the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), has decided to introduce a drama on social issues in Class X curriculum.

This will be introduced from the next academic calendar of SEBA from 2020.

The aim behind the introduction of the short plays/skits in the SEBA curriculum is to make the students familiar with the prevalent social customs and superstitions.

It would also help them in generating awareness against these customs and superstitions and thereby help them in developing a narrative about the same.

"The new chapter to be introduced in Social Science against 10 marks of internal assessment from 2020 would be purely practical in nature," reported The Assam Tribune quoting SEBA Chairman RC Jain.

"As part of this initiative, the students need to discuss and debate about prevalent social problems and challenges," Jain further informed.

The SEBA chairman made it clear that the participation of every child is mandatory.

It may be mentioned here that students, under the initiative, would have to simulate the proceedings of the State Legislative Assembly.

Different students would be assigned different roles from the state cabinet from the Chief Minister to the Finance Minister.

They will introduce the issues in the "House" and then engage in elaborated discussions and deliberations.

The students would be divided into different and would be assigned with different topics.

This exercise would help the students in gaining practical knowledge about the issues, beyond the theories, says Jain while explaining the reason behind introducing the subject.

"Learning won't be meaningful until students engage in meaningful exercise that triggers creativity," he adds on.

Jain feels that the new generation must know about the existing problems in society and think about probable solutions.

"At the same time, it will also generate awareness about child rights, which is the need of the hour,” the SEBA Chairman further adds.

It may be mentioned here that since 2017, to encourage the students to understand the Assembly proceedings in a better way, the Department of Parliamentary Affairs also started exposure visits of students to the Assam Legislative Assembly.

As a part of this exercise, students from various colleges and other institutes of higher studies have visited the Assembly and witnessed the House proceedings live.
