January 31, 2021

Who do you think are the most highly educated Indian cricketers who have made a mark in the field of education as well as on the cricket field?

With the emergence of various cricket players from a humble background, it is mostly assumed that cricketers leave their studies early to pursue their dreams of playing for the country.

Not just from India, but inspirational stories of cricketers from rags to riches is common in almost every cricket playing nation.

Sometimes cricket fans believe that as cricketers leave home early or they come from a humble background, hence they are mostly not well-educated and don't have higher degrees.

Well, this might be true in some cases, but there are some cricketers who are well educated and extremely qualified.

Here is a list of five highly educated Indian cricketers who had achieved massive success in the field of education before they set foot on the cricket ground.

The list is about those highly educated Indian cricketers who completed their highest degree before making India debut and not after.

Amay Khurasiya

One of the most Highly Educated Indian Cricketers

A left-handed batsman and a right-arm bowler, Amay Khurasiya made his One-Day International (ODI) debut against Sri Lanka in 1999 and scored a 50 in the match.

However, Khurasiya's career did not really take off and on November 2001 he played his last ODI against Sri Lanka.

In his career, Khurasiya played 12 ODIs and scored a total of 149 runs with an average of 14.54.

Khurasiya has the rarest distinction in Indian cricket to be the only player who had cleared the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) examination before he made his India debut.

Today, he is an Inspector in the Indian Customs & Central Excise Department.

Anil Kumble

The former team India captain and coach Anil Kumble has a degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering from Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering.

The big-hearted Indian Indian spinner was known for his fast flippers and googlies, which troubled most of the batsmen.

He also has the distinction of being the second bowler in the history of Test cricket to claim all ten wickets in an innings.

He achieved this feat on February 7, 1999, in Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi against Pakistan. He took 26.3 overs to achieve this feat.

Javagal Srinath

Known for his pace and accuracy, Javagal Srinath during his time was one of the fasted Indian bowlers.

The lanky fast bowler from Karnataka played 67 Tests and 229 ODIs for India and claimed 236 and 315 wickets respectively.

However, before making his India debut, Javagal Srinath had already completed his engineering from Mysuru.

Ravichandran Ashwin

One of the finest all-rounders of the present era, Ravichandran Ashwin is the fastest Indian bowler (also in some records the joint-fastest in the world) to reach the 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 wicket mark in Test matches in terms of the number of innings taken.

After completing his engineering, Ashwin did a regular job and worked for Cognizant Technology Solutions before he made his India debut.

Ashwin has 377 Test wickets from 74 matches and has also claimed 150 wickets in 111 ODIs.
