Infant Bites Cobra To Death In Bihar, Survives Snake Encounter

July 26, 2025

In a startling incident in Bettiah village, Bihar, a one-year-old boy reportedly bit a cobra to death after the venomous snake coiled itself around his hand while he was playing near his home.

The child, identified as Govinda, lost consciousness shortly after the encounter and was swiftly taken to a nearby Primary Health Centre.

From there, he was referred to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Bettiah, where he is currently under medical observation. Doctors have confirmed that his condition is stable.

Local residents believe the cobra had ventured too close to the child, possibly provoking a defensive response.

Eyewitnesses described the infant’s act as reflexive—sinking his teeth into the snake and fatally wounding it.

Govinda’s grandmother, Mateshwari Devi, recounted the moment of the encounter.

“The snake came out, and the child hit it with something before biting and killing it. It was a gehuaan (cobra). The child is just one year old,” the media reported quoting her.

She also mentioned that Govinda's mother was nearby collecting firewood at the time.

While such incidents are rare, experts caution that close encounters between children and snakes in rural areas are not unheard of, especially during the monsoon season when snake activity increases.

Medical professionals have reiterated the importance of immediate treatment in such cases, even if no visible signs of envenomation are present.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the snake managed to bite the child before it was killed.
