As per reports, the citizens of Guwahati are all set to get piped gas supply by 2021 end- a move which hopes to ease the city's cooking gas woes.

The chairman of Duliajan Numaligarh Pipeline Limited (DNPL) Rupam Goswami informed the media that the work to carry the gas line from Numaligarh to Nagaon is on.

“The gas line is expected to start supply by next year in Guwahati,” Pehal News reported quoting Goswami.

It's worth mentioning here that a consortium of three public sector items- Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL), Oil India Limited (OIL) and GAIL Gas Limited- has integrated a brand new firm for implementation of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) Networks.

Director and CEO of DNPL and chairman of Purba Bharati Gas Private Limited Gokul Ch Swargiyari informed that there’s an abundance of gas within the state.

“We will provide piped gas in Kamrup Metro and Kamrup and we are expecting that in the next nine months we will able to provide piped gas in Guwahati," Swargyari said.

"In Silchar, we have already provided 300 piped gas connections and by the end of this year the number will be 1000," he further informed.

“In Barak valley, our target is to provide one lakh connections and in two districts of Kamrup around three lakh connections," he further said.

"Around 72 CNG stations will be set up in these districts,” he added.

It's worth mentioning here that AGCL can also be keen to present piped gas in seven different districts, and has participated within the expression of curiosity.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our works were affected. However, we are trying to make up," Swargiyari stated.

"The Assam government has assured that the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses will be converted to CNG," he further said.

"In some tea estates of Upper Assam piped gas is provided and we are getting a good response for this is cost-effective. Piped gas will hugely benefit the tea industry," he further said.

Meanwhile, Rupam Goswami informed that an amount of Rs 6,000 crore is being offered by the authorities for the Northeast India gas grid.

The National Gas Grid Pipeline (Urja Ganga Project) which was initially deliberate for an extension from Jagadishpur in Western Uttar Pradesh, to Haldia in West Bengal, was consented to be prolonged to Guwahati in Assam, by the Centre by an intermediate spur line from Barauni in Bihar to Guwahati and the Gas Pipeline building work is being carried out by GAIL India Limited.

Swargiyari added that the Barauni to Guwahati part of the Nation Gas Grid is probably going to be accomplished by next year.

Thereafter, eight states of the North East shall be linked by Indradhanush Gas Grid Ltd. to the National Gas Grid.

According to state authorities the connection of Assam to the National Gas Grid, regular supply of Natural Gas shall provoke a spurt within the industrial sector, energy era sector, automotive CNG sector and home piped gas to households sector and it’ll act as a catalyst to set off immense improvement and employment alternatives all through Assam and different components of Northeast Region.

Goswami acknowledged that there was regular development in revenue of DNPL from 13.48 Crore of 2016-17 it has grown to 35.42 Crore in 2019-20.
