Pradyot Debbarman has urged the indigenous people of Tripura to unite for a big battle against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Debbarman, who is founder of the Tripura Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA), gave the call while addressing a massive anti-CAA rally on Saturday at Dasharambari, 14 km from Agartala.

Almost all regional political parties, including the Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura (IPFT), joined the rally.

This has given a new twist to Tripura's tribal politics ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) polls.

TTAADC polls are slated for April-May later this year.

It may be mentioned here that IPFT is a partner in the BJP-led state government.

Though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is strongly supporting the CAA, the Congress and the CPI(M) are vehemently opposing it.

While addressing the rally, Debbarman called upon the indigenous people to unite for "Twiprasa".

"When I was the Tripura Congress president, I was stopped from raising my voice for my community," Debbarman said.

"Now, I am free to fight till the end of my life for the welfare of Tiprasa dapha (Tripura Society)," he added.

"Today, I do not belong to the Congress but to the TIPRA- the organisation I have founded," the royal scion added.

"I was told to withdraw the case I had filed in favour of the NRC in Tripura, and not to speak against the CAA. These are all politics to divide Twiprasa,” he added.

Pradyot Debbarman reiterated that he will continue to fight against CAA with the support of the indigenous people of Tripura.

"Now people and leaders from different political parties and organisations have joined the TIPRA movement to protect the indigenous people," he said.

"Indigenous people were divided by the political parties for their political gains, but Twiprasa people should unite for their society, he said."

"A section is now trying to trigger ethnic clashes in Tripura to destroy the unity and amity between tribal and non-tribal people," he added.

On the tension in Kanchanpur subdivision, Debbarman said, "I am not an enemy of the Bengalis and whatever loss they suffered during anti-CAA stir will be compensated."

He appealed to all indigenous people of Tripura to maintain peace and brotherhood with Bengalis.

"Do not to fall prey to any political propaganda," Debbarman warned.
