Ritam Library In Sualkuchi

Ritam Library: A Sanctuary For Bibliophiles In Sualkuchi

September 3, 2024

In just a year since its opening, Ritam Library in Sualkuchi in Assam's Kamrup district has quickly become a beloved sanctuary for booklovers from across the state.

The library is a treasure trove of literary wonders, boasting an impressive collection of books spanning multiple genres, including some rare and out-of-print gems that are difficult to find elsewhere.

From timeless children's classics to bestselling literary masterpieces, Ritam Library is a paradise for any bibliophile seeking to lose themselves in the magic of words.

Named in honour of the gifted author Ritam Kalita, who tragically passed away at a young age, the library is more than just a collection of books—it’s a living tribute to his passion for reading and writing.

Rather than being overwhelmed by grief, Ritam's parents turned their sorrow into a mission: to keep their son's memory alive through this library, which now stands as a beacon of his love for literature.

Ritam wasn't just a talented author; he was also an enthusiastic reader. The library, housed in the very rooms where he once lived and dreamed, serves as a poignant reminder of his life and legacy.

"These two rooms, where we’ve set up the library, were Ritam's personal spaces. One was his bedroom, the other his study. After his untimely demise, my wife and I felt we needed to do something to honour his love for books and literature. That’s how the idea of the library was born, and it was inaugurated on 16 July 2023," shares Ritam's father, Bikash Kalita while speaking to DD Assam.

"Every month on the 16th, we host a literary discussion in the library, where we engage in vibrant conversations about the art, literature, and music of Assam with fellow enthusiasts," he adds.

At a time when the younger generation is said to be drifting away from books, Ritam Library offers not just a place to satisfy their thirst for quality reading but also serves as a launchpad for nurturing their literary talents.

So, next time when you visit 'Silk Heaven of India', be sure to carve out some time to explore this hidden gem!
