Tamil Nadu Cinema Rules Amended: Theatres Allowed 5 Daily Shows For New Releases

The Tamil Nadu government has amended the state’s cinema regulations to allow theatres to screen five shows a day for newly released Tamil movies during the first seven days of their theatrical run.

The change is expected to provide greater flexibility to exhibitors and help producers and theatre owners maximise box-office collections during the crucial opening week.

Under the revised framework, cinema halls will be permitted to schedule five screenings daily for the first seven days following the release of a new Tamil film.

The relaxation marks a departure from the earlier system, under which theatres were generally limited to four regular shows a day, with additional screenings requiring special permission or being allowed only on select holidays and festival occasions.

The decision follows representations made by members of the Tamil film industry to Chief Minister S Joseph Vijay during a meeting held in May, where producers, distributors and theatre owners sought measures to support the sector amid changing audience habits and growing competition from digital streaming platforms.

According to the government order, theatres will also be allowed to conduct five shows a day on weekends, public holidays and local festival days, easing restrictions that previously required separate approvals for additional screenings.

The amendment is expected to streamline operations for exhibitors while enabling audiences to access more screening slots for major releases.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the decision, describing it as a long-standing demand that could strengthen box-office collections during a film’s opening week, often considered the most commercially important period of a theatrical release.

Theatre owners and producers believe the increased number of screenings will help accommodate audience demand for high-profile releases while improving occupancy rates and revenue generation.

The Tamil film industry has recently urged the state government to introduce a range of reforms, including tax relief measures, stronger anti-piracy initiatives and simplified approval processes for film production and exhibition.

The latest amendment is being viewed as one of the first major policy measures addressing those concerns.

The revised rules come at a time when the theatrical business is attempting to recover audience footfall amid the rapid expansion of OTT platforms and shifting viewing preferences.

Industry observers say the additional daily show could provide greater flexibility for exhibitors and help large-scale releases capitalise on strong opening-week demand.
