Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, that the state government is considering a significant administrative restructuring at the district level.

The state government is hosting a three-day conference involving district commissioners in the Tinsukia district.

During the conference, the Chief Minister intended to decentralise administration from the state headquarters.

The Deputy Commissioners of each district will be empowered with authority comparable to that of Chief Secretary-level officers. Furthermore, the guardian ministers of the districts will function as the Chief Ministers within their respective districts.

Sarma also highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to transfer power from the central government to the state and district levels.

"The Prime Minister is strengthening the state machinery, and we are further extending this to the district level," Sarma stated.

"At present, we are transferring maximum power to the district level, and subsequently, it will be delegated to the block level. This move will benefit the impoverished individuals residing in rural areas, as they will no longer need to visit the state headquarters for various tasks," he elaborated.

Moreover, Sarma revealed that the state government had compiled a list of 300 madrassas slated for closure shortly.

On the sidelines of the conference, the Chief Minister attended the inauguration of a BJP party office in Tinsukia.

"We have planned to establish BJP offices in every district and at the block level. Our objective is to ensure that all party decisions are made within these party offices, avoiding the nurturing of individual ambitions," he said.
