"Twins are rarely encountered in elephant populations and form around only 1 per cent of births. Quite often the mothers do not have enough milk to support two calves," the Star Of Mysore report further added.
"The next few days will be crucial for the survival of the twins," Start Of Mysore reported quoting forest officials at Bandipur.
The officials have hence decided to monitor the mother and her two calves closely.
It may be mentioned here that elephants have the longest pregnancy of any living mammal.
The African elephants are pregnant for an average of 22 months.
