World Environment Day: History & Significance

World Environment Day was first celebrated on June 5, 1974, and this is one of the biggest annual events of the United Nations.

The primary aim of the World Environment Day is to raise awareness among masses across the world on the environment, its degradation and also conservation.

The day was first established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

Every year WED is celebrated keeping in mind a particular theme and the theme of the first  World Environment Day in Spokane in the USA was 'Only One Earth'.

Like the previous years, the theme for World Environment Day 2020 is 'Biodiversity'.

Announcing about it, the United Nations in a statement said, "This year, the theme is biodiversity- a concern that is both urgent and existential."

"Recent events, from bushfires in Brazil, the United States, and Australia to locust infestations across East Africa- and now, a global disease pandemic- demonstrate the interdependence of humans and the webs of life, in which they exist," the statement added.

This year's theme focuses on 'time for nature' and providing the essential infrastructure that supports life on Earth and human development.

This year's event will be hosted in Colombia and Germany will partner the event.
